River cruise transfers: airport, ship and excursions

Cross-border transfers are international occasional services
A transfer that crosses a border, such as Vienna to Budapest, is an international occasional service. The operator needs a Community licence and runs it under a journey form. Any local excursion abroad must be entered on that journey form before departure, so the full itinerary is needed early, not the night before. That is the single biggest planning difference from a transfer within one country.
Airport-to-ship runs and real distances
Vienna to Budapest is about 245 km, 2.5-3 hours; Vienna to Bratislava about 80 km. Munich to Salzburg is about 145 km, and Prague to Dresden about 150 km. A group landing in one city to board in another can travel direct, with luggage underfloor, rather than taking a train with cases. On the longer runs, the driver's 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving is part of the timing, so a 2.5-3 hour transfer fits inside the limit, while a longer day with an excursion on the way may not.
Ship berth and boarding time
Give the operator the ship name and the berth address from the cruise documents. Boarding times are fixed, so the plan works back from the gangway, allowing for traffic and any city rules at the berth end. In Budapest, Danube cruises pass Parliament and the Castle; in Amsterdam, the S100 ring limits where a large coach can go. For a group of fewer than 20, a minibus may reach the berth more easily than a coach.
