Florence airport transfers, chauffeurs and group coaches

In Florence a coach either holds a permit or is breaking the rules: the ZTL Bus covers the whole built-up city, day and night. Here is what that means for arrivals, touring and airport runs.

The contrassegno, and why one fine grounds a whole fleet

No coach enters built-up Florence without a contrassegno, bought online and shown on the vehicle. Cameras have checked for it since 1 July 2025, so a pass paid for but not displayed still counts as missing. The operator buys it for a specific day; fix the itinerary before you accept, because a date change on your side means a permit change on theirs.

Since 15 November 2025 a single parking fine stops the operator buying permits for its whole fleet for seven days. That is why a Florence driver will not idle at a kerb for a late group.

Set-down points and where the coach waits

Groups board and alight at Piazzale Michelangelo, Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Largo Vincenzo Giudice; Savonarola is drop-off only. Between runs the coach parks at Viale XI Agosto (T2 Guidoni), Campioni del 56, via Palazzeschi or Piazzale Galileo. Neither the Uffizi nor the Accademia has a stop at its door; time museum slots to include the walk.

Piazzale Michelangelo allows 20 minutes at most: a photo stop on the terrace, not an aperitivo.

Peretola, Pisa and when the tram is enough

Peretola is about 5 km out, 15 to 25 minutes by road. Arrivals are on the ground floor of its single terminal, where the NCC chauffeur consortium desk sits; coaches use four yellow-striped bays at the airport bus station by arrivals. A lone executive suits a chauffeur car; a delegation of 40 suits a coach with its contrassegno already bought.

Pisa, about 85 km away, is a proper road transfer, so size the vehicle for luggage as well as heads. Tram T2 reaches Santa Maria Novella in about 20 minutes: fine for individuals, wrong for a group with cases.

Fortezza da Basso congresses and Franchi match days

Firenze Fiera runs the Fortezza da Basso near Santa Maria Novella and the Palazzo dei Congressi. With delegates spread across the Centro Storico, Oltrarno and the Fiera area, two smaller vehicles on a loop often beat one full-size coach. On Fiorentina match days the coach park near the Franchi closes; keep pickups away from that district.

Leaving the ZTL Bus for Chianti and the hill towns

Greve in Chianti is about 30 km away; San Gimignano, Siena and Lucca each take 1 to 1.25 hours. A midi coach copes better with historic town centres than a 13 m vehicle, and the permit governs only the Florence legs of the day.

No. Loading happens at authorised stops, and one fine would lock the operator out of permits for a week.

Peretola is 15 to 25 minutes from the centre, with coach bays on site. Pisa is about 85 km away, and the price reflects the distance.
