Neither is automatic: the operator applies, and the permit has to be in place before the day.

A minibus of 16-19 seats suits a small group or a sixth-form trip; a full-size coach of 49-57 takes a year group, with bags underneath. Staff count as seats, and a spare seat or two gives room for a pupil who needs to sit near a teacher.
