Budapest airport transfers, chauffeurs and group coaches

Budapest is easy on coaches with one exception that catches many itineraries: the Castle District. Anything that climbs Buda hill runs through the BABU permit system.

BABU: getting a coach up to Buda Castle

Coaches may enter the Budavár protected zone only with a permit issued through BABU. The permit fixes a route and the driver must keep to it; overstays and deviations bring surcharges. Inside the zone a coach stops for 15 minutes, for set-down or pick-up only.

Between those stops the coach waits at designated parking on Palota út, Attila út or Alsó Mészáros utca. Ybl Miklós tér, at the foot of the hill, is a set-down point.

Running a Castle District visit around 15 minutes

Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church both sit inside the Castle District, so one drop and one collection can cover both. Give the operator both times; the permit is applied for to match. Have the guide at the coach door and tickets in hand, because the stop is for moving people, not for regrouping. If the group runs late, the coach cannot circle inside the zone, so agree a fixed collection time and hold to it.

Ferenc Liszt airport: 2A, 2B and the Bus Terminal

The airport is about 20 km from the centre, 30 to 50 minutes by road. Schengen flights use Terminal 2A and non-Schengen flights 2B, so tell the operator which one each wave uses. Tourist buses pick up at the Bus Terminal, a minute or two from both; the first 10 minutes are free and a separate Bus Parking handles longer waits. For a single executive, a chauffeur car at arrivals is the direct answer. The 100E and 200E public bus stops between 2A and 2B suit only individuals travelling light.

HUNGEXPO, Buda congresses and Puskás Aréna nights

HUNGEXPO is in the 10th district; the Budapest Congress Center is in Buda. Hotels in Districts V, VI and VII are on the Pest side, so a Buda congress means a river crossing every morning; stagger the shuttle waves. For the Puskás Aréna or MVM Dome, fix the post-event pickup point before the day.

Danube Bend, Balaton and the Vienna transfer

Szentendre is about 20 km, Esztergom about 65 km, Balatonfüred about 130 km. Vienna, about 245 km and 2.5 to 3 hours, makes a clean one-way link in a two-capital programme.

Can the coach park near Buda Castle?

Not inside the protected zone. It sets down within 15 minutes, then waits at Palota út, Attila út or Alsó Mészáros utca.
