Wine tours with a driver: Chianti, Champagne and the Heurigen
The point of a wine tour is that nobody in the group drives. We arrange vans, minibuses and midi coaches with licensed partner operators, routed to the vineyards and timed around the driver's breaks.
The right size for a tasting day
Midi coaches of 29-35 seats are the typical wine and day-tour vehicle: big enough for a club outing, compact enough for estate approaches. Up to eight travellers fit an executive van; 16-19 fit a minibus. Estates set their own group sizes for tastings, so a large party may split across two vehicles and two estates, then meet for lunch.
Distances from the city
From Florence, Greve in Chianti is about 30 km (40-50 minutes), San Gimignano about 55 km and Siena about 75 km, so a Chianti day can take in a hill town as well. From Paris, Reims in Champagne is about 145 km, 1.5-2 hours each way. From Vienna, the Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey are about 90 km, while the Grinzing Heurigen wine taverns are in the city with a coach set-down open 24 hours. From Venice, Padua is about 40 km and Verona about 120 km for a Veneto day.
Breaks and daily limits on a long tasting day
A driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving, which can be split into 15 and 30 minutes, and daily driving is capped at 9 hours, extendable to 10 hours twice a week. A Paris-Reims day with three estates fits comfortably; adding a long detour usually does not. Lunch at an estate is the natural place for the driver's break, and a clear list of stops and times lets the operator check the day before you book.
