The AVM pass: what a coach needs to cross the ZTL BUS line
A tourist coach entering Venice's ZTL BUS area must display a pass issued by AVM. Without one, it is confined to the Mestre bypass and the airport link road, which covers an airport-to-mainland-hotel run and little else. Inside the zone the coach may stop only in authorised boarding areas and dedicated car parks.
ZTL check-in points are staffed 06:00 to 20:15. An early departure or a late gala return outside those hours means buying the pass online beforehand. Partner operators do this routinely; what they need from you is exact timings, so the pass matches the day.

Tronchetto, the People Mover and the one-hour clock
Coach parking at Tronchetto is capped at one hour. That is time to unload a group and its bags, not to park while guests tour. The People Mover runs from Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma, where water buses and water taxis take over. Brief the group that the coach leg ends at the island's edge, and budget for porters or a water taxi if hotels are in San Marco or Castello.
A mainland base in Mestre changes the pattern: luggage stays off the bridges, and each morning becomes a short coach run to the lagoon edge, with the pass in place.
Marco Polo and Treviso arrivals
Marco Polo is about 13 km from Piazzale Roma, 20 to 30 minutes by road. Commercial coaches stage at the PBus area on the north side of the terminal. NCC chauffeur cars and coaches may use the airport's controlled traffic zone and load inside the car parks; tourist buses are exempt from its 10-minute limit, and the Sosta Breve car park gives 20 free minutes for loading. Treviso's Canova airport, about 40 km out, needs a longer transfer window.
Mainland days: Padua, Verona, the Dolomites
Padua and Treviso are within about an hour, Verona 1.5 to 2 hours, Cortina d'Ampezzo 2 to 2.5 hours. A Cortina return is a full driver day; check it against the 9-hour daily driving limit before adding stops.
Questions
Can a coach take us to St Mark's Square?
No. Road transport ends at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. From there it is water bus, water taxi or walking; the water leg is not part of a coach booking.
Does an airport-to-Mestre transfer need the AVM pass?
Not if the coach stays on the Mestre bypass and the airport link road. Anything entering the ZTL BUS area needs the pass.
We land after 20:15. Is that a problem?
Only for buying the pass in person. The operator buys it online in advance, so give final flight times when you book.
